Washington-Hoyt Awarded Make a Splash Grant
The City of Tacoma Make a Splash Environmental Program awarded the Washington-Hoyt PTA a $2,000 grant to build a rainwater catchment and irrigation system. The system will divert rainwater from the school roof into large cisterns. A drip irrigation system will then water the school vegetable garden with that stored rainwater. Students will help design and build the system. Also, interactive presentations will be made to each class to help students understand stormwater pollution and how to prevent it. We will also have a contest to select a student submitted design to paint the cisterns.
As the project progresses all project information will be collected at this web site. Currently, the only project document is the Project Application.
As we begin the project, help is needed in the following areas:
- With 4th and 5th grade classes, design the rainwater collection and storage system.
- Install the rainwater collection and storage system
- With 4th and 4th grade classes, design the irrigation system
- Install the irrigation system.
- Prepare curriculum to present rainwater runoff issues to class
- Present curriculum to classes
- Run the contest to pick a student submitted design to paint the cisterns
- Paint the cisterns
Help with any part and with any level of experience is greatly desired. Contact Gerrit Nyland at (253) 304-5105 or gnyland@drizzle.com for more information.
